Ways to Get Through It: Coping with Ongoing Events in Israel
I don’t need to inform you that these are heavy times. Everyone is feeling it. When the world feels all too intense, let your own mental well-being take priority. Here are some ideas for restorative practices you can engage with on the heavier days.
Journal– A good way to get the thoughts out of your head and into something contained. Freewriting can be helpful, but if you want something more structured, try these prompts: How do I feel physically in this moment? Where do I feel my pain? What are some ways I can take care of myself this week?
Connect with your community– Celebrate and utilize togetherness to get through times that may feel isolating. Organize something. Grab a meal with friends or watch a movie.
Self soothe– Engage all your senses. Chase down a sunset, listen to your favorite song on full volume, burn a nice-smelling candle, eat your favorite meal and really pay attention to the experience, pet a furry friend or take a hot shower.
Distract– Distraction can be one of the most useful tools to cope with heaviness. There is a space between ignoring an emotion and wallowing in it, and that space includes both feeling and stepping away at times. You being miserable does not help anyone. Turn off the news. Actively choose to not think about it for a bit, if you can.
Give yourself grace– Ask for an extension if you need it. Accept how you’re feeling and give yourself permission to not be at 100%.
