What to Watch at Home: Our Favorite Rom-Coms

What to Watch at Home: Our Favorite Rom-Coms

With all the “free time” we now have staying at home, what better thing is there to do than cozy up with a bowl of popcorn and a Rom-Com? Here are some recommendations made by your very own Junior Rosh, Simona Lewis. Enjoy!

1. Set It Up (Netflix)

This movie is honestly SO cute in my opinion. Basically, two assistants try to help their bosses fall in love, but end up falling in love with each other (small spoiler I guess, but you figure this out within like 20 seconds). It’s not as well known as some of Netflix’s more recent Rom-Coms, but definitely one of my favorites nonetheless.

2. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (Netflix)

If you’re a Rom-Com fan and haven’t seen this movie, I’m honestly not sure what you’re doing. Regardless, if you haven’t seen it, give it a watch! It’s about a girl who writes love letters to each of her crushes but never sends them… until her sister does! Very cute high school romance. And… there’s a sequel?! So if you’re looking for some time to kill…

3. A Walk to Remember (Hulu)

I recommend this one more if you’re looking to cry. It’s a little bit older (2002), but I still highly recommend watching it if you can get past the worse graphics. Also a high school romance about a quiet religious girl and a ‘typical’ Rom-Com guy. Mandy Moore plays the female lead, and also voices Rapunzel in Tangled (fun fact!).

4. The Spy Who Dumped Me (Hulu)

The Spy Who Dumped Me is definitely more on the comedy/action side of Rom-Coms, but is absolutely hilarious! Great to watch if you’re looking to laugh late at night. It is rated R, though, so beware of that. A spy dumps his girlfriend and tells her his mission and she and her best friend have to travel internationally on a crazy adventure to complete it. Throughout it, there are many funny mishaps, but there’s also a really nice character arc where they discover their self-worth and the strength they have within themselves.

5. The Kissing Booth (Netflix)

I’ve gotten a lot of hate for liking this movie, but I actually think it’s really cute. A girl has been best friends with a guy for ages and has always had a crush on his older brother, but one of the rules of their friendship is that she isn’t allowed to like him. Regardless, they fall in love (of course) and the movie is about their story together.

6. Always Be My Maybe (Netflix)

I didn’t love this movie as a Rom-Com. It’s a good storyline and a good idea, but I wish they played into the romance a little more. It does take place in San Francisco, though, which made it fun to watch and spot places that I knew. It’s about two high school sweethearts reconnecting when they’re older and both very different people.

7. The Perfect Date (Netflix)

As much as I love Noah Centineo, this movie didn’t really do it for me. His character makes an app where he signs up to be your fake date to make money but develops feelings for one of the girls, played by Laura Marano (who was also Ally from Austin and Ally, if you were a Disney fan).

8. Falling In Love (Netflix)

In this movie, a girl buys an Inn on a whim but has to renovate the entire thing and falls in love with her contractor. I found the plot predictable and boring, if I’m being honest, but depending on how long we’re in quarantine and how many of these movies you end up watching, you might as well give it a watch!

These are just movies I’ve watched so far, but in my extra time over this “break” some of the top movies on my list are To All the Boys 2 - PS I Still Love You (Netflix), Every Day (Hulu), Dumplin (Netflix), Candy Jar (Netflix), and Tall Girl (Netflix).
